There is no shortage of events and festivals in Stardew Valley. One of the festivals is the annual Luau. During the Luau, you will get to interact with the residents of Pelican Town, and contribute to the communal soup. This guide is going to go over everything you need to know about the Luau. The big reward for this event is friendship points, so we will also go over how to get the best outcome. Updated February 4, 2022, by Belle Huston: Stardew Valley is a game where you spend your time farming, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. It only makes sense, then, that you'd be able to participate in local events and competitions to prove the quality of your crops! The Luau, a summer festival, is one such occasion. We've updated this guide for clarity and to indicate exactly what you need to do to win.

When And When Is The Luau?

Stardew Valley - Summer Calendar on left, Map of Stardew Valley on right

The Luau takes place every year on Summer 11. The Luau will occur on the beach, just south of Pelican Town.

The area will be blocked off until 9 am, when the event starts. It just means you will have enough time in the morning to tend your crops, collect eggs, and milk your cows. To get there just head to Pelican Town and take the bridge south of the Mayor's house.

You can attend the Luau later than 9 am, however, the event will end at 2 pm. If you show up past this time, the event will be over. When you leave the event, you will immediately be transported back to your farm at 10 pm. Although the Luau technically ends at 2 pm, attending it will take the entire day.

Special Items For Sale At The Luau

Stardew Valley - Pierre's shop at the Luau

During the Luau, you will also be able to purchase limited items from Pierre. Right as you enter the beach, Pierre will be set up to the right. Below are the items available as well as their prices.

  • Wall Palm: 1,000g
  • Jungle Decal (4 variations): 800g
  • Ceiling Leaves (3 variations): 400g
  • Totem Pole: 1,000g
  • Starfruit: 3,000g
  • Plain Torch: 700g

These items will be available every year of the Luau. If for some reason, you can't buy them all, they will come again next year.

What You Should Add To The Soup And The Rewards

Stardew Valley - The Governor at the Summer Luau

The main event of the Luau is the potluck. When you enter the Luau at the beach, you will see four tables surrounding a giant pot of soup. Walk around and explore the Luau, and eventually add your item to the soup. When you are ready, talk to the Mayor to get the tasting started. Once the tasting is done, the event will end.

The Luau is attended by the Governor, who will taste this soup. Your goal is to add the best item to the soup, which will impress the Governor. There are six different responses that the Governor will give:

  • Best Response: "Oh my... that's the best soup I've ever tasted!"
  • Good Response: "Ah... that's a very pleasant soup. The produce from this valley never disappoints!"
  • Neutral Response: "Hmm... I don't have much to say about this. It's an average soup."
  • Bad Response: "Um... It's actually kind of disgusting. I think I'll pass on the soup this year."
  • Worst Response: "Blech! This is vile! I think I'm going to be sick..."
  • Nothing Added By The Player Response: "Hmmm... Well it's not bad, but it's missing something... Did everyone in town contribute an ingredient to the soup? I feel like it's missing someone's unique voice."

Depending on his response, you will also gain or lose friendship points with the residents of Pelican Town. Pretty much every edible item in the game can be added to the soup. This is a lot, so we are going to go over the best response, as well as responses that you do not want to get.

The Best Prank Ever: Putting Lewis' Shorts Into The Soup

Stardew Valley - The Governor with Lewis' shorts at the Summer Luau

We have to admit that we lied: there are actually seven responses that the Governor can give to your soup. The seventh response is only received if you decide to put Mayor Lewis' underwear into the soup.

  • Secret Response: "Hmm... It's a bit tangy... but actually, the flavor is quite good! Just one minute... there's something in my bowl... what's this?"

Lewis is outraged, but the incident doesn't result in any change in friendship with any villagers (including Lewis).

How To Obtain The Lewis' Shorts

Stardew Valley - Lewis in Marnie's Bedroom

On Summer 3, the Mayor will send you a letter asking you to find his purple shorts. The shorts can be found in Marnie's bedroom. If you are close enough with Marnie, you can enter her room and grab the shorts. Instead of returning them to Lewis right away, just hold on to them until the Luau.
